Early Beginnings

In 1885, Mr. John T. Armet and his wife rented a corner of a brother’s stationery store where they began what they called Bible Truth Depot. May 7, 1899, was the date of the first issue of a new Sunday school paper called “Messages of Love” begun by the Armets. It began, “Our Dear Little Friends: If the Lord permit, we hope to have a paper like this one for you every week, telling you of God’s love to this world of sinners. What could be more wonderful to tell you about than the love of God, and that love being towards us when we had no love for Him.” By God’s good hand, that paper presenting God’s love and salvation has been continuously published from that day to this. In January of 1915 the Armets began a full-fledged bookstore at 1112 Taylor Street, St. Louis, Missouri, to distribute, as the name suggests, Bible truth through periodicals, books, pamphlets, hymnbooks, tracts, and (more important than all the rest) the Word of God.

Bible Truth Publishers

By 1947, brother Armet had been with the Lord for over twenty years and sister Armet was ready to pass the work on to others. A non-profit corporation was formed and given the name Bible Truth Publishers, with the purpose of carrying on the good work that the Armets had begun under the name of Bible Truth Depot and to add to the scope of the work by also becoming a publisher of the works of sound Bible teachers, stories illustrating Bible truth, and the biographies of those whose faith we are to imitate. In 1951 the work was moved to Oak Park, Illinois, and, in 1977, to Addison, Illinois. Many around the world have come to know Bible Truth Publishers (or BTP, as it is often called) through the Joyful News and Pocket (Wallet) Calendars, now printed in over thirty languages. These gospel messengers were added to BTP’s list of printing projects early in the 1970s.

Current Desire

As it began, so the work continues with the desire to share God’s good news with the lost and God’s truth for the whole church of God. We present “God our Savior; who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:3-4).

What Do I Learn From Scripture?

(What We Believe)

I learn from the Scriptures that there is one living God,1

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:5)
“For therefore we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.” (1 Timothy 4:10)
fully revealed to us in Christ,2

and known through Him as Father, Son and Holy Spirit,3
X
“And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him. And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:16‑17)

in the unity of the Godhead,4
X

“And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.” (1 Corinthians 12:6)
but revealed as distinctively willing,5
X
“For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:38‑40)

“And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” (Romans 5:5)
that we have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father;69

“For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.” (Romans 8:15)
“And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.” (Galatians 4:6)
“At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.” (John 14:20)
that they who have received this Spirit not only cry, Abba, Father, but know that they are in Christ, and Christ in them; that thus not only He appears in the presence of God for them, but they are in Him who is sitting at the right hand of God, expecting till His enemies be made His footstool;70
X
“And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” (Ephesians 2:6)
“For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.” (Hebrews 9:24)
“But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God. From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.” (Hebrews 10:12‑13)
that they are dead to sin in God’s sight, and to reckon themselves so; having put off the old man, and put on the new; alive to God through Jesus Christ (Christ is their new life); crucified to the world, and dead to the law.71
X
“For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3:3‑4)
“Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds. And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him.” (Colossians 3:9‑10)
“Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.” (Romans 6:6)
“Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:11)
“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)
“But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.” (Galatians 6:14)
I learn thus that if they are in Christ, Christ is in them, and they are called upon to manifest the life of Jesus in their mortal flesh72
X
“At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.” (John 14:20)

X
“And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” (Philippians 2:8)
“I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.” (John 17:4)
“Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.” (Hebrews 7:27)
“Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others. For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment. So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.” (Hebrews 9:25‑28)
“But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God.” (Hebrews 10:12)
“Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.” (Hebrews 10:18)

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)

I learn that the Lord has left two rites, or ordinances, both significative of His death; one initiatory, the other of continual observance in the church of God—baptism and the Lord’s supper.88
X
Matt. 28:19; Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; 8:12,16,36; 9:18; Eph. 4:5; 1 Cor. 1:17; 1 Peter 3:21; Rom. 6:3; Col. 2:12; Matt. 26:26‑28; Mark 14:22‑23; Luke 22:19‑20; 1 Cor. 11:23‑26; 10:3‑4.
I learn that, when Christ ascended up on high, He received gifts for men, for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, and that from Christ the whole body, fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplies, makes increase of the body, to the edifying of itself in love.89

I learn that, as the grace and sovereign love of God is the source and origin of all the blessing,90
X
John 3:16,27; 1 Cor. 2:12; 4:7; Eph. 2:7‑10; Titus 2:11.
so continual and diligent dependence on that grace is that by which we can walk after Him and to His glory, who has left us an example that we should follow His steps.91
X
John 15:5; Phil. 2:12‑13; 1 Thess. 5:17; Rom. 12:12; Luke 18:1; 2 Peter 1:5‑10, and many others. John 8:12; 10:4; 12:26; 17:10; 2 Cor. 5:15; 1 Cor. 6:19‑20; Rom. 14:7‑8; 1 Cor. 10:31; Col. 3:17; 1 John 2:6; 1 Peter 2:2.
I learn from the example and authority of the Lord and His apostles that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament are inspired of God, and are to be received as the Word of God, having His authority attached to it, and which works effectually in those that believe,92
X
Matt. 4:4,7,10; Luke 24:25‑27,44‑46; John 5:39; 10:35; Matt. 5:17‑18; John 20:9; Matt. 1:23, and a multitude of passages. and that the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple, discerning the thoughts and intents of the heart, being understood, not by the wisdom of man, but by the teaching of God, being spiritually discerned; they are revealed, communicated and discerned by the Spirit.93
